We’re a volunteer run charity with a long history of working for the elderly in Southwark, helping to relieve loneliness and social isolation at Christmas with our Christmas Day party.

Southwark People Care Association (PCA) originates from a service founded before the Second World War. Our purpose remains the same as all those years ago. We’re here to relieve loneliness and social isolation by providing a Christmas Day Party for elderly and disabled local residents. Now, as then, we invite all those who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day. Except for the war years, our party has been an annual event for over 70 years. In May 2011 we were named as one of the Mayor of Southwark’s Charities of the Year.

Legal Status
We assumed the status of a registered charity in 1973. More recently we became People Care Association Ltd, a company limited by guarantee. Our Registered Charity No. is 3837543.

We have around 350 guests each year, of a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Some have lived their whole lives in Southwark, others are recent arrivals. The majority of our guests are older people. However, we also welcome many people with learning and/or physical disabilities, as well as those with mental health issues. The party is a great chance for our guests to meet up with old friends and make new ones.

The party could only take place with the support of our volunteers - selfless, fantastic people who give up their own Christmas to make the day special for others. Driving, cooking, setting up, washing up, clearing away... You can imagine how much work goes into putting on a party for 350 people. Plus there’s plenty of opportunity for volunteers to chat with guests and enjoy the festivities.

  Mission and outcomes
We take pride in our efforts to relieve loneliness, depression and
social isolation at a time of year that can be particularly hard for
people on their own. 5,000 older people live alone in Southwark. More than 3,000 older people suffer from depression.
Our on-the-day surveys and the feedback and thank you letters we receive show us that guests really appreciate the party and how it makes them feel at Christmas. The increasing number of referrals from sheltered housing and mental health professionals show the value of our service.

Southwark PCA has almost zero running and administrative costs - practically our entire outgoings are spent on the annual party. Although our income needs are relatively small, even for a local charity, it’s vital for us to secure external funding. We have a longstanding relationship with Southwark Council, whose support is crucial to the charity. The majority of our funding comes from businesses big and small, from global banks to local shops and pubs.

Staff and contacts
All of the people who help run the charity are volunteers. We have no paid employees. A voluntary board of Trustees provide oversight, direction and guidance.
